SUNY New Paltz College Engineering Innovation Hub

New Paltz, NY

SUNY New Paltz College’s new academic and incubator building represents a quantum leap forward for the Mechanical Engineering Department, while serving as a catalyst for collaboration between academia and local industry. This cutting-edge facility houses an impressive array of specialized spaces, including an energy systems lab, computer lab, hardware lab, materials science lab, and thermo-fluids lab, alongside a machine shop and senior project design area. At its core, industry partner Hudson Valley Advanced Manufacturing Center (HVAMC) drives advancements in 3-D printing technologies. The building also embraces the Start-Up NY program, providing space for businesses to co-locate on campus, fostering a dynamic ecosystem where academic research and industrial application converge.

Architecturally, the building strikes a balance between form and function, creating a new “Engineering Plaza” in harmony with the existing Resnick Hall. Its contemporary design features a rectilinear volume with a cleverly skewed mid-section, forming an inviting lobby entrance. The structure’s varying floor footprints allow for eastern roof terraces, while a thoughtfully designed main entrance, set back under a column-supported overhang, elegantly sidesteps the need for costly utility relocations. The exterior seamlessly blends traditional materials such as brick and slate with modern zinc and metal shading devices, creating a visually striking yet contextual façade.

Inside and out, the building showcases its cutting-edge purpose. Fenestration and façade treatments are meticulously planned to optimize interior space use, solar orientation, and overall composition. The interior spaces proudly display elements fabricated using 3-D printing technology, serving as a tangible demonstration of the advanced work taking place within. The integration of design and function creates an environment that not only supports but inspires the next generation of engineers and entrepreneurs, embodying SUNY New Paltz’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of technological education and industry partnership.
