Rockland Children’s Psychiatric Center

DASNY / NYS Office of Mental Health

The collaboration between the New York State Office of Mental Health and New York University has resulted in a remarkable new inpatient psychiatric facility designed by Urbahn. This 56-bed facility not only advances knowledge in the field of pediatric psychiatry but also sets a new standard for healing environments in the state. The building’s design thoughtfully balances sustainability, openness, and wellness, creating an atmosphere that encourages family involvement and promotes a sense of optimism throughout the recovery process. The design embraces biophilic principles throughout the interior spaces, incorporating natural light and carefully selected finishes that integrate organic elements and patterns found in nature, creating subtle connections to the natural world. At the heart of the facility lies The Neighborhood, a central hub that connects patients to essential amenities such as a school, gymnasium, pool, medical and dental clinics, and various spaces designed to support their well-being.

The facility’s four living units, each accommodating 14 beds and featuring adjoining dining areas, successfully blend the security and sightlines necessary for a modern psychiatric facility with the comfort and familiarity of a home-like environment. This connection to nature extends throughout the interior spaces, where biophilic design elements create a subtle but constant reminder of the natural world. Recognizing the importance of nature in the healing process, landscaped outdoor spaces were seamlessly integrated as crucial elements of the facility’s program. These secure outdoor areas are carefully designed to cater to the unique needs of different age groups and therapeutic functions, providing patients with a serene and nurturing environment that complements their journey towards recovery and well-being.
