PS 107K Elementary School
The New York City School Construction Authority initiated a range of modernizations and upgrades for a venerable Brooklyn elementary school exemplifying 19th Century Romanesque revival architecture. The project’s focal point was the transformation of the attic into a multifunctional space and media centre. Working with the SCA, our team completely reimagined the space, removing existing systems and designing new distribution systems that feature carefully arranged exposed cylindrical ducts and suspended lighting tracks. This design strategy was complemented by the restoration of a skylight and the integration of programmable lighting systems, facilitating dynamic atmospheric modulation for diverse events.
In a separate project, the exterior received meticulous attention. The preservation efforts encompassed the restoration of brick, repointing, and refurbishment of cast stone and terracotta elements. This comprehensive approach to renovation exemplifies the delicate balance between modernization and historical preservation in educational architecture.
The project demonstrates the potential for adaptive reuse within the constraints of historic structures, effectively synthesizing contemporary functionality with architectural heritage. The result is a rejuvenated educational facility that better serves its community while maintaining its significant cultural and architectural integrity.
