Eastern Parkway Station Accessibility Upgrades
The Eastern Parkway-Brooklyn Museum subway station on the IRT Eastern Parkway Line has undergone significant upgrades, including the addition of three hydraulic elevators and the replacement of one streetlevel stair, to achieve full ADA compliance. The station, which serves the 2 and 3 trains, is a popular destination for visitors to the Brooklyn Museum and Brooklyn Botanical Garden, whose advocacy and support helped drive the project forward.
The design team faced several challenges, including modifying the east mezzanine structure to accommodate the new elevators, relocating utilities, and ensuring continuous station operation during construction. The complexity of integrating these new elements into the existing station infrastructure required careful planning and coordination to minimize disruption to passengers and maintain the station’s historic character. The project also included unique elements such as the restoration and relocation of terracotta and stone artwork from the museum’s collection, which had been installed on the station walls during a previous renovation. The completed project has transformed the station into a fully accessible facility, with new elevators, stairs, lighting, providing an unobstructed path from the street level to the train platforms.
