Centro Médico Correccional

Bayamón, Puerto Rico

This state-of-the-art correctional healthcare facility brings high-quality, centralized medical and psychiatric care to Puerto Rico’s inmate population in a safe, secure, and humane environment. The design successfully reconciles the often conflicting demands of corrections and healthcare operations, ensuring that both the incarceration and medical functions are effectively served. The ground floor houses essential services such as medical offices, inmate intake and holding areas, central security, and a comprehensive range of diagnostic and clinical departments. The upper floors are dedicated to inpatient care, with the second floor offering 100 beds in both dormitory-style and segregated cells, and the third floor providing an additional 100 beds specifically for inpatient psychiatric care.

The building’s design draws inspiration from Puerto Rico’s vernacular construction, with its 3-story massing, formal articulation, and vividly colored stucco façade creating a structure that feels both modern and rooted in the local architectural tradition. Recognizing the critical function of the facility and its location within a hurricane zone, extensive measures were implemented to ensure continuous operations. These include flood resiliency design, redundant HVAC systems, and emergency power generation, all of which contribute to the facility’s ability to provide uninterrupted care to its inmates, even in the face of natural disasters. The result is a correctional healthcare facility that sets a new standard, prioritizing the well-being and rehabilitation of its inmates while maintaining the necessary levels of security and safety.
