Pelham Bay Park Orchard Beach Bathhouse

The Bronx, NY

On the crescent shores of Pelham Bay Park stands Orchard Beach’s historic bathhouse – a modernist monument where classical forms meet humble materials: Designed in an era when beach recreation followed a different model, the original structure no longer met the evolving needs of the local community. To address this disconnect, the reimagining of the beloved landmark began with an intensive market analysis, engaging the community to determine the most valuable and desirable uses for the space.

The resulting master plan envisions dynamic new spaces: waterfront dining venues, flexible event facilities, a natatorium, and an indoor recreation center. A rooftop amphitheater crowns the structure, while enhanced connections to Pelham Bay Park weave the building into its natural setting. The proposed interventions span a spectrum from preservation-focused to more transformative, with the final approach balancing respect for the building’s historic significance with the need for bold contemporary functionality.

Every architectural intervention considers the building’s historic fabric while addressing modern challenges. The design implements sophisticated flood resilience strategies and accessibility solutions, ensuring this coastal icon serves its community for generations to come. From minimal interventions that prioritize adaptive reuse to more extensive reimaginings that introduce contemporary structures, the range of options explored reflects the complex considerations at play in modernizing this beloved landmark.
