Stony Brook Medical Center Comprehensive Psychiatric Emergency Program
The new Comprehensive Psychiatric Emergency Program (CPEP) addition at Stony Brook University Medical Center demonstrates the institution’s commitment to expanding and improving emergency psychiatric services. Designed to accommodate over 5,000 patients annually, the facility addresses several key objectives, including the need to support current operations while planning for future growth, the separation of adult and pediatric patients, increased operational flexibility, and reduced patient length of stay. The CPEP also provides dedicated space for nursing, social work, and medical students, seamlessly integrating the facility into Stony Brook’s educational programs.
The interior design of the CPEP prioritizes patient well-being and creates an atmosphere conducive to healing. Skylights and faceted ceilings in the main adult and child treatment areas foster a sense of delight and openness, enhancing the overall patient experience. The exterior of the addition is designed to harmonize with the existing hospital, utilizing materials and a sidewalk canopy that seamlessly blends the new structure with its surroundings. A striking faceted stainless-steel rooftop equipment screen punctuates CPEP’s prominent location, creating a visually compelling architectural feature that showcases the facility’s importance within the medical center campus.
