Manhattan Surrogate’s Court Atrium & Skylight
At the heart of a 1907 Beaux Arts masterpiece, the Surrogate’s Court’s luminous atrium presented a complex preservation challenge where time and elements had taken their toll on the building’s historic fabric. The restoration centered on its ingenious dual-skylight system, where modern engineering worked in harmony with historic artistry, the outer skylight reimagined with contemporary materials and a historically faithful copper ventilator, while the inner ornamental laylight underwent meticulous restoration of its original glass and decorative metalwork.
A sophisticated climate control system, discretely integrated between the two layers maintains optimal conditions for the building’s artistic elements. This technical innovation protects the exquisite features that define the space, including hand-painted faux marble cornices and lunette friezes—ensuring this architectural treasure continues to captivate visitors with its restored splendor.
