The College of New Jersey Science Complex

Ewing Township, NJ

The master plan and design for this project centered around creating a cohesive building complex that formed a new landscaped Science Quadrangle, establishing a distinct sense of place within the larger context of TCNJ’s Georgian-Revival campus. The complex, designed in traditional forms and clad in brick and cast stone, features Doric columns and arched windows, fulfilling the client’s desire for a harmonious aesthetic that complements the historic campus core.

In striking contrast to the classical exterior, the interior of the complex is filled with cutting-edge facilities that support the diverse needs of the biology, chemistry, biochemistry, physics, astronomy, and geology departments. The building houses an array of specialized teaching and research spaces, including an electron microscopy laboratory, a planetarium, two observatories, and two greenhouses. A crucial aspect of the design was the incorporation of informal common areas adjacent to learning spaces, as well as arcades, spacious entrance lobbies, and an arched portico, all of which encourage spontaneous interaction between students and faculty, fostering a vibrant and collaborative academic atmosphere.
